Have you ever looked at those dreamy, flowy bed canopy on Pinterest and been like I want one of those for my kids room then you clicked on the link and they cost $150.00 or more! Yeah me too. But I have the best solution. Make your own. It is easy, budget friendly and looks so so so cute hanging, plus you have the pride of make it yourself.

I will try my very best to tell you how to make your own bed canopy but bare in mind I did it all without a pattern and just put it together based on a few picture that I liked. I would say that this is a tutorial for someone with good knowledge of how to sew. But if that isn’t you I have linked 2 other tutorials at the end so you can make your own bed canopy with no sewing needed.

Supplies you need:

– Sewing Machine
– Queen size Bedsheet
– Ribbon
– 14 inch embroidery loop
– tracing paper or large paper bag
– pencil

7 Steps To DIY A Dreamy Bed Canopy

Step One – Prepare The Sheet

To start you will need to find the sheet of your choice, I found my blush pink bamboo sheet from the thrift store for $4.00, it was a steal of a deal. When you get home wash and dry your sheet as usual then iron it so you have a nice flat surface area for working. Ironing the fabric will allow for a more precise cut. then make a straight all the way across the bottom of the sheet 17 inches up.

Step Two – Cut The Top Triangles

Pull out your tracing paper or brown paper. Draw a triangle that is 16 inches tall and each side should measure 16 inches as well. After drawing your triangle add a 1/2 concave to the 2 sides of the triangle. I do this by making a mark half way up the side (8 inches up) then measure in 1/2 inch and reconnect the sides to the the new center point on a concave curve. The concave sides will create a tapered in triangle instead of a hard line and just looks a little more elegant in my opinion. Set the pieces aside.

Step Three – Hemming The Cape

Time to start sewing, match the colour of your thread to your fabric colour or use white. Now you need to do a small rolled hem all the way along where you made the cut for your tringle fabric. I made a small 1/2 inch rolled hem you can make it whatever size you want. If your sheet doesn’t have folded over seam at the top then you need to hem the sheet 5 inches. Measure down from the top of the sheet 5 inches, fold at that line then sew 1/4 inch seam at the two pieces of fabric not close to the fold. This will give you a little pocket.

Step Four – Ruching The Skirt Of The Canopy

Now you are ready to ruche the top of the canopy. Measure 1.5 inches down from the top at make a basting stitch all the way across, then sew another basting stitch 1/2 inch below the first basting seam. Next pull the strings to make the seam bunch up. After you have ruched the whole sheet thread the crochet hoop though the sheet below the second ruche seam. This will let you to know if you need to ruche the fabric more or if you need to do it less. Both sides of the sheet should touch so it covers all the embroidery hoop. Now remove the hoop and sew a regular stitch between the two basting stitches to secure the ruching. Once secured remove the basting stitches.

Step Five – Sewing The Top Triangles

You will be sewing all three of the triangles together to make a triangular prism leave a small opening at the top or tip of the triangle to attach the string to hang the canopy. Once you have finished sewing the triangles together it is time to attach the string to the opening. To do this keep your triangle prism inside out then tread a little bit of the string through the hole from the inside of the triangle out and sew straight across.

Step Six – Sew Top and Bottom Together

Now that you have the top half and the bottom half ready it is time to sew them together. If you want a frill at the top like I did the you will sew the right side of the top (triangular prism) to the wrong side (or inside) of the skirt of the canopy an inch down from the top of the skirt. Pin and sew all the way around.

Step Seven – Thread the Hoop

Now you are ready to thread the embroidery hoop though your canopy! After this make a small stitch just below the hoop to keep both sides together so you do not see the wooden hoop. Now you are all DONE!! YAY! Hang it up and admire your work.

I am so excited that you completed your DIY Bed Canopy here is a few way you can style them. Try it over a bed, in a reading nook or as a hanging fort for the kids. Tag me on Instagram @livinglifegingerly if you make your own, I can not wait to see them!
